With timely professional diagnosis and treatment, most small cavities can be repaired at Frandsen Dental with a standard dental filling. If you struggle to maintain a consistent daily oral hygiene routine or if you are lax to attend your bi-annual dental exam at our clinic, you are at increased risk of suffering another cavity.

If tooth decay develops on a tooth that has an existing cavity, there might not be enough healthy tooth enamel remaining to secure a second filling. To treat a tooth in this condition, Dr. Colton Rich might advocate fully restoring the tooth with a dental crown.

The crown will completely replace the entire tooth enamel layer as well as the old filling in an alternative material like gold, metallic alloy or dental-grade porcelain.

Dr. Colton Rich will start the process by using a drill to remove the entire tooth enamel layer. This leaves behind a small pillar of healthy dentin that is known as an abutment. The abutment encases the healthy pulp and root of the tooth.

Your dentist will then take an impression of the area, which will be sent to our off-site dental lab where your final crown will be made. A temporary crown will then be secured over the abutment to protect it.

You will need to come back in for a second appointment when your final crown is ready. The temporary crown will be removed and a strong dental adhesive will be used to cement your crown in place.

If you live in the Orem, Utah, area and you have a tooth suffering from a large cavity, you should call 801-224-7900 to schedule treatment at Frandsen Dental.
