Your tooth enamel is the hard shells that protect the inner layers of your teeth. It’s important to maintain strong and healthy enamel so you can have the strong and healthy smile you deserve. When you have braces, that might be a little tough. So, our orthodontist, Dr. Colton Rich, is happy to give you the tips you need to have strong tooth enamel when you have braces in Orem, Utah.

First, have a tooth-friendly diet. This means you need to avoid foods and drinks that have sugar and acid. Sugar and acid attack the tooth enamel and work very hard to wear it down. In fact, they often cause tooth decay and enamel erosion. So, it’s best to eat and drink products that help the teeth, like foods and drinks that have calcium.

Second, avoid over brushing your smile. Sadly, you can wear down your tooth enamel if you brush too fast and too hard. So, make sure you are soft and gentle as you brush and you only brush after meals and right before bed. It’s also important to avoid brushing after you have consumed something acidic.

Third, use fluoride often. Fluoride is a natural mineral that strengthens and nourishes your tooth enamel. So, please expose your smile to it regularly. You can do so by brushing with fluoride toothpaste, rinsing with fluoride mouthwash, and drinking fluoride water.
