Sensitive Smiles: Why Do My Teeth Feel Tender?

Have you noticed an unpleasant tingling or sharp sensation, especially when consuming overly hot or cold foods? When it comes to your teeth, no pain is considered ‘normal’, and sensitivity can point to one or more of several potential underlying concerns. Not only that, but oral issues don’t usually resolve themselves and tend to worsen in time.

Contacting your dentist sooner rather than later allows them to identify and treat the root problem to prevent dental problems, like damage, decay, or disease, from progressing. Continue reading to learn about 3 potential causes for your sensitivity and how your provider can help!

Cause #1: Eroded Enamel

Thinning enamel is an incredibly common dental problem that can cause mild to moderate tenderness in your teeth. Although it’s the hardest substance produced by the human body, it doesn’t regenerate. It can be harmed by bacteria in your mouth that produce acids, which work in tandem with the foods you eat to erode it. Then, as the underlying layer of dentin is exposed, the microscopic tubules contained there can more easily carry sensation to the tender roots inside.

This is especially true if you’re consuming anything too hot, cold, or spicy. Call your dentist to schedule an appointment so they can examine your teeth and gums to determine appropriate solutions. Sometimes the answer is as easy as brushing less aggressively, but more severe cases could require dental bonding or fillings to repair the damage.

Cause #2: Minor Injuries

It’s easy to assume that if you don’t see any obvious issues, your teeth and gums must surely be healthy. However, that’s not necessarily true. Many people have unknowingly sustained minor chips and cracks that are so thin or small they didn’t notice them right away.

Unfortunately, even seemingly minor fractures can be problematic because they can lead to additional injuries or an infection. If unwanted germs penetrate the crack, they can infect the soft roots inside, causing swelling, aches, and inflammation. This sometimes requires a more complex procedure, like a root canal, to address. Otherwise, your dentist can provide lifelike solutions to preserve your smile’s appearance and functionality.

Cause #3: Worn Down Restorations

Although dental fillings and crowns can potentially last for 10 or more years with the right care, they will likely eventually wear down and require replacement. Brushing and flossing twice daily can maintain them, but the force of daily biting and chewing eventually takes its toll.

This can leave the troublesome tooth vulnerable to further harm and cause tenderness as sections of damaged enamel become more exposed. Your dentist will need to provide a new filling or crown so you can continue using it to eat and speak normally.

If your tender teeth are detracting from your daily quality of life, contacting your provider can provide some much-needed relief!
